The aim of the process of this public search to fill the position of the Principal Conductor of the Colombian National Symphony Orchestra is to give equal consideration to all conductors interested in the position, those that have worked with the orchestra, those who only know it by name and those who are only now, through this search, are finding out about it. We hope to receive a wide variety of artistic proposals all of which will be examined by a committee assigned by the Colombian Ministry of Culture which will select a three-candidate pool to be evaluated by the Board of Directors of the National Association of Symphonic Music.
I. Description of the Position
The Principle Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra bares the responsibility for the orchestra’s artistic performance and development. He/she is in charge of designing artistic programming according to the criteria established by the National Association of Symphonic Music. As artistic director, he/she will have to closely and continuously collaborate with the members of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Symphonic Music. He/she must also become involved with the community, studying and designing music programs that cater to different segments of society and well as be the main agent responsible for the construction and growth of the orchestra’s permanent audience.
The principal conductor must dedicate a minimum of 20 weeks a year to working with the Orchestra and be available for such duties as evaluating, programming and activity planning for the Orchestra and the Association. Moreover, he/she will be responsible for designing and implementing programs that will impact the music sector such as competitions, internships and workshops. During the rest of the year, he/she may attend other engagements outside of Colombia while staying in permanent communication with the orchestra’s administration.
The principal conductor will provide support to the National Association of Symphonic Music and will contribute to the development of the Ministry of Culture’s music policies with his/her concepts and opinions.
